Color Converter & Contrast Checker
Test color combinations against WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines and convert HEX to RGB.
This live preview demonstrates how regular paragraph text and heading elements appear with your selected color pairing.
How It Works & Calculation Method
Digital accessibility compliance (WCAG 2.1) mandates minimum contrast ratios between foreground text and background colors to ensure readability for visually impaired users and outdoor mobile viewing.
Our Color Converter translates hexadecimal hex codes into RGB values and evaluates relative luminance to output pass/fail scores for standard body text and large typography.
The tool extracts hexadecimal red, green, and blue components into 8-bit integers (0-255).
It calculates relative luminance using sRGB gamma correction, and computes the contrast ratio as (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05).
Mathematical Formula
Contrast Ratio = (Lighter Luminance + 0.05) / (Darker Luminance + 0.05)Worked Example: Black Text (#000000) on White (#FFFFFF)
Evaluating baseline high-contrast typography.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- •Using light grey text (#999999) on white backgrounds that fails basic WCAG AA thresholds.
- •Assuming high contrast on desktop displays guarantees readability on low-brightness mobile screens.
- •Neglecting that large text (18pt+) has lower contrast thresholds (3:1) than body text (4.5:1).
Who This Tool Is For
- •UI/UX designers creating accessible design systems and component color palettes.
- •Frontend developers auditing web apps for ADA and Section 508 legal compliance.
- •Digital marketers ensuring email newsletters and banners remain readable.
