How It Works & Calculation Method

An Equated Monthly Installment (EMI) is the fixed payment amount made by a borrower to a lending institution at a specified date each calendar month. EMIs are designed to amortize both loan principal and accrued interest.

Our loan calculator models reducing-balance interest formulas utilized by commercial banks worldwide, illustrating how interest components decline as principal debt is gradually repaid.

The calculator computes periodic monthly interest rates by dividing annual interest by 1200, and evaluates the compounding formula across your specified tenure.

It displays your required monthly installment, total cumulative interest payable, total repayment commitment, and principal-to-interest percentage ratios.

Mathematical Formula

EMI = [P * r * (1 + r)^n] / [(1 + r)^n - 1] (where P=Principal, r=Monthly Rate, n=Tenure in Months)

Worked Example: Rs 1,000,000 Car Loan Over 5 Years at 12%

A borrower finances a new vehicle with a 1,000,000 auto loan over 60 months at 12% per annum.

•Principal P = Rs 1,000,000.
•Monthly interest rate r = 12 / 1200 = 0.01.
•Total months n = 5 * 12 = 60.
•Numerator = 1,000,000 * 0.01 * (1.01)^60 = 18,166.97.
•Denominator = (1.01)^60 - 1 = 0.816697.
•Monthly EMI = 18,166.97 / 0.816697 = Rs 22,244.
•Total repayment = Rs 22,244 * 60 = Rs 1,334,667.
•Total interest = Rs 1,334,667 - Rs 1,000,000 = Rs 334,667.
Final Result: Monthly EMI: Rs 22,244 | Total Interest: Rs 334,667

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • •Confusing reducing-balance interest rates with flat interest rates (flat rates cost nearly double in real interest).
  • •Extending loan duration to lower monthly payments without realizing total interest expense escalates dramatically.
  • •Forgetting bank processing fees, document stamp duties, and mandatory credit insurance charges.

Who This Tool Is For

  • •Car buyers shopping auto loan financing terms across competing lenders.
  • •Individuals budgeting personal debt consolidation and repayment strategies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Equated Monthly Installment (EMI)?
An EMI is a fixed monthly payment paid to a lender that covers both monthly interest charges and a portion of the original loan principal.
How does loan tenure affect my monthly EMI?
A longer tenure lowers your monthly installment amount but substantially increases the total cumulative interest paid over the life of the loan.
What is a reducing balance loan?
In a reducing balance loan, interest is calculated strictly upon the remaining unpaid principal each month, reducing interest costs as debt is paid down.
Can I pay off my loan early to save interest?
Yes, making extra principal prepayments reduces the compounding debt balance and eliminates future interest charges.
Does the calculator include bank processing fees?
This tool calculates pure principal and interest amortization; bank documentation and processing fees must be factored separately.
How is monthly interest calculated from annual interest?
The annual interest rate percentage is divided by 12 months (e.g., 12% annual rate equals 1% monthly interest rate).
