Base64 Encoder & Decoder (Online Text Utility)

Encode strings to Base64 or decode Base64 strings client-side.

Convert plain text into Base64 encoded format or decode Base64 strings back into readable text. Runs completely client-side in your browser, supporting full UTF-8 character sets with zero server latency.

How It Works & Calculation Method

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that represents binary data in an ASCII string format by translating it into a radix-64 representation. It is widely used in MIME email transfer, basic HTTP authentication, and inline data URI schemes.

Our client-side utility safely handles standard ASCII characters as well as multi-byte Unicode (UTF-8) code points, ensuring symbols, emojis, and foreign characters encode and decode without truncation.

The encoder breaks binary streams into 6-bit groups (2^6 = 64 combinations), mapping each group to an index in the standard Base64 character set (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, +, /).

Padding characters (=) are appended to align the output to a 4-character boundary.

Mathematical Formula

Base64 Output = 4 ASCII characters representing every 3 input bytes (33% size expansion)

Worked Example: Encoding 'KitVela'

A developer encodes the string 'KitVela' for an HTTP authorization header.

•Input ASCII text = 'KitVela'.
•Convert characters to 8-bit binary representation (7 bytes = 56 bits).
•Group bits into 6-bit chunks and look up indices in Base64 table.
•Add padding character to align 4-character boundary.
•Output string = 'VG9vbEh1Yg=='.
Final Result: Base64: VG9vbEh1Yg==

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • •Assuming Base64 is an encryption algorithm (it is purely an encoding scheme that provides zero cryptographic secrecy).
  • •Failing to handle UTF-8 multi-byte characters in older JavaScript window.btoa implementations.
  • •Confusing standard Base64 with URL-safe Base64 which replaces '+' and '/' with '-' and '_'.

Who This Tool Is For

  • •Web developers embedding inline SVG or PNG assets via Data URIs.
  • •API engineers constructing Basic Authentication authorization header tokens.
  • •Systems administrators decoding configuration payloads and obfuscated secrets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Base64 considered encryption?
No, Base64 is a public encoding format designed for safe data transmission, not data security. Anyone can decode Base64 instantly.
Why does Base64 increase file size?
Base64 represents 3 bytes of binary data using 4 ASCII characters, resulting in a predictable 33% increase in data size.
What does the '=' symbol mean at the end of Base64?
The '=' symbol is padding used to align the final block to a multiple of 4 characters when input bytes are not divisible by 3.
Does this tool support emojis and non-English text?
Yes, our implementation supports full UTF-8 character encoding, ensuring accented letters and emojis convert without corruption.
What is URL-safe Base64?
URL-safe Base64 replaces the '+' and '/' characters with '-' and '_' so the string can be safely passed in web URLs without percent-encoding.
Are my files uploaded when encoding?
No, all encoding and decoding operations execute entirely inside your local browser memory.
