How It Works & Calculation Method

Uniform Resource Identifiers (URIs) only permit a restricted character set from the standard US-ASCII spectrum. Characters outside this range—such as spaces, ampersands, slashes, and foreign letters—must be percent-encoded.

Our client-side tool uses standard `encodeURIComponent` and `decodeURIComponent` routines to ensure web URLs, tracking query parameters, and OAuth redirect callbacks transmit without corruption.

Encoding converts reserved and non-ASCII characters into their UTF-8 byte sequences, formatted as a '%' symbol followed by two hexadecimal digits.

Decoding scans for '%' triplets and reconstructs the original UTF-8 characters.

Mathematical Formula

Percent-Encoding: Character -> UTF-8 byte -> %HH (e.g. Space -> %20, '&' -> %26)

Worked Example: Encoding Query Parameters

A developer encodes a search query containing spaces and special symbols: 'smartphones & gadgets?'.

•Input string: 'smartphones & gadgets?'.
•Space converts to %20.
•Ampersand (&) converts to %26.
•Question mark (?) converts to %3F.
•Output: 'smartphones%20%26%20gadgets%3F'.
Final Result: Encoded: smartphones%20%26%20gadgets%3F

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • •Using encodeURI instead of encodeURIComponent when encoding individual query string parameters.
  • •Double-encoding URLs that were already percent-encoded (e.g. %20 becoming %2520).
  • •Forgetting that characters like '&', '=', and '?' carry special semantic meaning in URL query strings.

Who This Tool Is For

  • •Web developers assembling REST API query strings and webhook callback parameters.
  • •SEO specialists auditing UTM campaign tracking tags in marketing URLs.
  • •Systems engineers debugging OAuth redirection endpoints.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is percent-encoding in URLs?
Percent-encoding is a mechanism for encoding reserved or non-ASCII characters in URLs by replacing them with a '%' followed by two hexadecimal digits representing their UTF-8 byte.
What is the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?
encodeURI preserves protocol delimiters like 'http://' and slashes, whereas encodeURIComponent encodes all special characters, making it suitable for query parameters.
Why do spaces become '%20' or '+' in URLs?
In standard percent-encoding, spaces become '%20'. In application/x-www-form-urlencoded form data, spaces are traditionally encoded as '+'.
Can this tool decode malformed URLs?
If a URL has invalid percent-encoding (like an isolated '%' without two hex digits), the tool detects the error and flags the issue.
Does this tool support non-English characters?
Yes, it supports full UTF-8 encoding for Arabic, Urdu, Chinese, European accents, and emojis.
Is my URL transmitted over the internet?
No, all encoding and decoding operations run locally in your web browser memory.
